CPSM Certification: Three Exams And The Experience Rule
ISM’s procurement credential: the three exams, the experience it requires, how it is scored and what it costs.

What The CPSM Certification Is
The CPSM, Certified Professional in Supply Management, is the procurement credential of the Institute for Supply Management (ISM). It covers procurement and supply management: sourcing, category management, cost and price management, negotiation, contracts, supplier relationships, risk and compliance. Where ASCM’s credentials follow goods through the chain, CPSM follows the buying side: what an organization sources, from whom, on what terms and at what price.
Supply chain and procurement professionals whose primary job is supply management, procurement or supply chain. ISM counts only that kind of full-time professional experience toward the award.
The CPSM Experience Rule
Of the four credentials this site compares, CPSM is the only one with an experience requirement. Three years of full-time professional supply management experience with a regionally accredited bachelor’s degree, or five years without a degree. Clerical and support roles do not count toward the experience. The exams can come first: ISM lets candidates sit them before the experience is complete, and each passing score stays valid for 4 years. The application for the credential has to go in while all three scores are still valid.
That makes CPSM a credential for people already working in procurement rather than a way in. Someone still in school, or moving into supply chain from another field, can sit ASCM’s CSCP or CPIM, which have no experience rule.
The Three CPSM Exams
ISM splits the CPSM into three separate exams, each bought and scheduled on its own. A candidate has 6 months from buying an exam to sit it, at a Pearson center or online where ISM offers it.

- Supply Management Core: Sourcing; Category Management; Negotiation; Legal and Contractual; Supplier Relationship Management; Cost and Price Management; Financial Analysis.
- Supply Management Integration: Supply Chain Strategy; Sales and Operations Planning: demand planning, forecasting, and product and service; Quality Management; Logistics and Material Management; Project Management.
- Leadership and Transformation in Supply Management: Leadership and Business Acumen: strategy development, stakeholder engagement, and people development and coaching; Systems Capability and Technology; Risk and Compliance; Corporate Social Responsibility.
How The CPSM Exams Are Scored And Retaken
ISM doesn’t pass candidates on a percentage. It runs several versions of each exam and equates them for difficulty, then reports a scaled score from 100 to 600, in steps of ten. 400 or above passes that exam.
A candidate who fails waits 30 days before retaking that exam and pays the full member or nonmember fee again; ISM gives no discount on a retake.

What The CPSM Certification Costs
ISM puts the average total cost at $1,485 to $4,277 for members and $2,385 to $5,942 for nonmembers. A failed exam adds its fee again, since ISM prices a retake the same as a first attempt.
Keeping A CPSM Current
Valid for three years, then renewed with proof of continuing education. That is a shorter cycle than ASCM’s, whose credentials run five years between renewals.
CPSM Or CSCP
CSCP covers the whole chain in one exam with no experience rule; CPSM covers the buying side in three exams and requires professional experience. By subject, a buyer, category manager or procurement lead is in CPSM’s territory, and someone whose job spans sourcing, operations and delivery in CSCP’s.
